Tennis Court Etiquette
Like many tennis clubs Parsons Green Club does not facilitate the booking of courts and in general allows any tennis members to just turn up and play on its five tennis courts.
All members are welcome to turn up and mix-in at Social Tennis which occurs on Tuesday evenings between 6-9pm and Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 2pm and 5pm.
The Tennis Committee would prefer not to list a complex set of rules for ensuring that members never have to wait too long to play and instead trust the membership to be considerate at busy times. In general, when people are waiting to play, those who have been playing longest should give way first and doubles should have priority over singles play.
It is not acceptable for courts to be occupied with friendly singles matches when people are waiting if those waiting are willing to join up for doubles.
We encourage players and those waiting to communicate freely amongst themselves so that everyone is clear which courts will give way and how long any wait is likely to last. Similarly if several groups are waiting they should determine priority among themselves. A court cannot be held by anyone if others are waiting and ready to play.
During busy times only 3 set Championship matches (May to June) can remain on court until conclusion and competitors should make that clear and communicate the current score to waiting players.
Official PGC Ladder matches commenced during busy times should only be played over the minimum 1 set although matches already into a second set before anyone is waiting can be played to conclusion.
Ladder and Championship matches should be avoided when Courts 1 to 3 are being used for team matches and courts 4 and 5 only are available for members to play.
Members should avoid bringing guests at times when waiting is expected since most members would agree that they should have priority over casual guests. Those playing external matches (e.g. South London Tennis League) must pay a guest fee for their opponent.
To enable to all members to anticipate busy times and identify dates when matches are being played a Google calendar has been created (to access click on the link on the right). By emailing the Tennis Committee at least 24 hours in advance competitors in the 2008 Championships will also be able to pre-book a time slot on a specified court to play their match.
Thank you for your consideration in following the Tennis Court etiquette. Any problems or complaints about members not following the above should be communicated to the Tennis Committee.
