Croquet Section

Reg

Croquet is one of the very finest and most enjoyable of all sports. It is different because it requires delicacy and skill, rather than speed or strength, and tactical ability is just as important as physical skill. Croquet has been likened to a mix of chess tactics and accurate snooker skills, but with the added fresh air and exercise of golf.

A full-size croquet lawn is 35 yards by 28 (that’s the size of three tennis courts), has hoops only 3mm wider than the balls themselves, and grass as short as on a bowls green, so that the balls roll easily. As a result, the experience is quite different to that provided by that playing in a back garden. The same skills are required, though.

Croquet is played by both sexes on equal terms, and different levels of skill can be equalised through a handicapping system which allows all games to be exciting even when played between players of widely varying ability. Games can be played as singles or doubles.

Parsons Green has two excellent standard croquet lawns and caters for all standards, from raw novice to county standard. The emphasis is mainly on friendly and enjoyable play, although there is also plenty for those looking to stretch themselves and improve their game.

This year, croquet at Parsons Green has celebrated its centenary – the Croquet Section was founded in 1909. We celebrated the event with an exhibition match featuring the current world champion, South African Reg Bamford. It was a chance to watch the standard of croquet most of us can only dream about being able to play. At least for now…

We offer a variety of activities including:-

• Internal club competitions – doubles and singles; handicap and advanced; one-off and season-long
• Matches against other clubs – both competition and friendlies
• Fortnightly club evenings
• Social croquet
• Golf croquet days
• Social events
• Coaching

The Club’s best players also have the opportunity to represent the Club in local and national events.
